Post-Winter Siding Inspection: What to Check in Early Spring

Winter is winding down in Central Indiana, which means whatever your home’s exterior endured—wind, moisture, and freeze/thaw swings—is about to show itself. At Beeson Construction, Inc., we often see small siding issues surface right as temperatures start to climb. So, if you used our fall checklist in “Pre-Winter Siding Inspection: What Homeowners Need to Check,” consider this your spring follow-up. A quick post-winter walk-around can help you spot minor problems early—before spring rains turn them into bigger repair bills.

A Fast, 5-Minute Post-Winter Siding Check

  • Loose, cracked, or warped panels

  • Gaps between panels or at corners

  • Cracked or missing caulk at windows/doors

  • Dark staining, mildew, or soft spots

  • Bent, missing, or deteriorating trim/flashing

Start with a perimeter walk on a dry day. Look for siding that no longer sits flat against the wall—especially near corners, seams, and points of contact with hose bibs, lights, and vents. Even small openings can let water in behind the siding and create hidden damage.

Check the “Water Zones”

Inspect beneath rooflines and gutters, around downspouts, and anywhere snow piles tend to linger. Bubbling paint, soft spots, staining, or persistent mildew can signal moisture getting behind the siding. In her article for BobVila.com, Melissa Graham flags common red flags for replacement, such as cracking or rotting, bubbling paint, mold growth, fading, frequent repairs, and even a sudden jump in energy bills.

Repair or Replace?

In general, isolated problems often point to repair. When damage is widespread, you’re seeing rot, or a storm has compromised significant portions of the exterior, replacement may be the smarter long-term investment. Consult our resource, "When to Repair vs. When to Replace," for key decision points.

If Replacement Is on the Table, Choose Materials Built for Indiana Weather

Beeson Construction, Inc. installs Prodigy® Next-Generation Insulated Siding and James Hardie™ Fiber Cement Siding. Prodigy’s rigid foam backing is designed to boost R-value performance, reinforce panels, and help reduce outside noise. James Hardie products are Engineered for Climate® and designed to help defend homes from wet, freezing conditions—helpful when Indiana winters bring snow, ice, and temperature swings.
